What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Periodontal, gum, disease refers to the infection of the gums and the underlying tissue structures that support your teeth. If gums lose their structure and become infected, they can directly impact your teeth. This oral disease directly attacks sulcus, a shallow, V-shaped layer between the teeth and gums. The disease weakens the sulcus causing the tissues surrounding the teeth to break down and lose their flexibility. As the disease progresses, the sulcus deepens resulting in a deep gum pocket. The deeper the pocket become the worse the disease gets. This is why during the examination; the specialists check the depth of the sulcus, which should be between 3-4 millimeters. More than that measurement could indicate gum disease.

The Main Cause of Gum Disease

Bacteria are the main culprit behind gum disease. Oral maintenance is extremely crucial in order to keep gum disease at bay, but unfortunately, most people don’t have enough time to take care of their overall well-being due to a hectic lifestyle.

Over time, your teeth accumulate enough bacteria to form plaque which thickens over time causing calculus. Failure to remove that calculus results in gum disease.

The gum disease is usually classified as:

  • Gingivitis: a mild form of gum disease
  • Periodontitis: The more severe form of gum disease
